“Zanzibar was the perfect way to end our Tanzania safari with Discover Africa,” says Eric, a satisfied Discover Africa traveller. “After the excitement of the Serengeti, we spent time on the beach, went diving with dolphins, and generally just relaxed in paradise.”
Eric decided to pair his safari with a beach holiday – and it was the perfect combination. From a new marine reserve to explore and romantic sunset cruises to sublime culinary experiences and the vibrancy of Stone Town, let’s explore 10 of the best things to do in Zanzibar.
1. Stay at Bawe Island and Explore the Marine Reserve

A new marine reserve has been established around Bawe Island, one of the most luxurious and exclusive accommodations in Zanzibar. Bawe Island Resort is the only resort on the island and encompasses 70 villas, each with its own private pool and butler service.
The Cocoon Collection, of which Bawe Island Resort is a part, collaborated with the Zanzibar government to establish the new marine reserve. Changuu-Bawe Marine Conservation Area includes the whole coast of Bawe Island and was created for the conservation of coral reefs and fish species.
This underwater wonderland is a haven for diving and snorkelling. You can also explore the turquoise waters by gliding in a glass canoe – a captivating, serene experience.
2. See the Zanzibar Sea Turtles

The Indian Ocean that surrounds the Zanzibar archipelago is home to hawksbill and green turtles. Swimming close to these incredible creatures is an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left the island.
Sea turtle conservation in Zanzibar is taken seriously, and there are many initiatives dedicated to helping these creatures thrive, such as the Nungwi Mnarani Aquarium. It houses a sanctuary committed to the nurturing and rehabilitation of turtles, including a turtle conservation pond made in a natural lagoon. Every February, the aquarium holds a release party where rehabilitated turtles are released back into the ocean.
To swim with turtles in the wild, the reefs of Chumbe Island, Nungwi Beach, Mnemba Island, and Kendwa Beach are all places in Zanzibar that are known for their populations of sea turtles. When encountering a turtle while snorkelling or diving, keep your distance! Let them come towards you on their own terms.
3. Take a Traditional Dhow Sunset Cruise

Trading routes were once travelled by dhows, traditional Arabian sailing boats, transporting precious goods. Now, you can hop on one in Zanzibar and go on a romantic sunset cruise – imagine watching the sun paint pink, purple, and yellow hues over the gentle ocean waves as you sip champagne with your loved one. This is more than just a boat cruise; it’s a unique adventure that allows you to witness the beauty of the archipelago from a different perspective and connect with your loved one in a breathtaking romantic setting.
4. Indulge in Culinary Experiences

Zanzibar cuisine has a wealth of flavours thanks to its history as the “spice island”. Expect a fusion of Swahili, Indian, Arab, and Portuguese influences on your plate. Don’t miss out on these island staples:
- Pilau, with its intoxicating mixture of spices, is a rice and meat dish with Asian flavours.
- Mishkaki is grilled meat (beef, chicken, or goat) marinated in garlic, ginger, cumin, and chilli.
- Zanzibar pizza is a well-loved street food, but far removed from the traditional Italian version, as it can include egg, mayo, and chilli sauce along with meats.
- Kaimati are sweet dumplings with flavours of cardamom and rose, best enjoyed with coffee.
- Supu ya pweza is a soup complete with octopus, lemons, ginger, garlic, and cloves.
Another incredible way to immerse yourself in Zanzibar’s culinary history and tradition is through a spice tour.
5. Go on a Spice Tour
One of the best culinary experiences in Zanzibar is a spice tour. Wander through spice plantations, intoxicated by the heady smells of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. During a spice tour in Zanzibar, you’ll explore spice plantations and learn about how the range of spices are grown. You’ll also discover how these spices are woven into the history of the region and how they’ve impacted local culture and cuisine.
6. Visit Jozani Forest for a Zanzibar Safari

The only national park in Zanzibar and the largest forest on the island, Jozani Forest offers guided walking tours through awe-inspiring environments, including mangroves.
Zanzibar animals that call this park home include red colobus monkeys, Syke’s monkeys, over 50 species of butterflies, sea turtles, tree hyraxes, bushbabies, duikers, and over 40 species of birds.
7. Immerse Yourself in the History and Culture of Stone Town

A Zanzibar itinerary isn’t complete without a visit to Stone Town. The architectural and cultural wealth in this town is astounding – spotting the intricately carved doorways, the call to prayer echoing around you, and the historical buildings, it’s easy to see why this town was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For dinner one night, head to the Forodhani Garden Market. Feel the pulse of this bustling market along with local music while you wind your way among the stalls to pick some bites. Fresh fruit drinks, chapatti, grilled seafood, and kebabs, this is a feast to remember.
8. Meet the Giant Tortoises of Changuu Island

Also known as Prison Island for its past as a detention centre, it’s now famous for its population of Aldabra giant tortoises. In 1919, the British governor of Seychelles gifted four tortoises to the island. While their population dwindled due to hunting, conservation efforts have successfully saved these gentle giants from extinction, and their population is recovering. Visitors can feed the tortoises and observe their social interactions.
You can visit this island to feed the tortoises and see them go about their daily lives. The stunning blue ocean surrounding the island is perfect for snorkelling, thanks to clear conditions and the abundance of fish.
9. Snorkel or Dive at Mnemba Island

Mnemba is a triangular island surrounded by colourful coral reefs, making it a spectacular destination for snorkelling and diving adventures. The marine life you can spot while exploring includes tropical fish, dolphins, and turtles. If you’re lucky, you may be able to see whale sharks. Clear, pristine conditions further make this an unforgettable experience in Zanzibar.
The island is home to just one exclusive resort, andBeyond Mnemba Island Lodge, which encompasses 12 beachside bandas, including a family banda. The calm turquoise waters are just a few steps away from the resort. In the water, you’re able to explore the island’s coral nursery and artificial coral reef restoration project.
AndBeyond is dedicated to conservation efforts – the island is recognised as a significant breeding site for green turtles, and there are daily beach patrols to monitor and document turtle activity. Mnemba Island has also become a sanctuary for two antelope species: Ader’s duiker and the suni antelope.
10.Relax and Recharge at Nungwi Beach

No Zanzibar holiday is complete without at least a day spent relaxing on one of its flawless beaches. Nungwi Beach, located on the northern tip of Zanzibar, is known for its pristine white sand, turquoise waters, and vibrant atmosphere. Take to the water to snorkel among the colourful coral reefs and tropical fish, and relax on the beachside, soaking up the sun.
Around every corner in Zanzibar is a new opportunity to create a lasting, treasured memory. From the lively markets and winding alleys of Stone Town to the tranquil turquoise waters of Changuu-Bawe Marine Conservation Area, this island paradise offers an unforgettable escape for every traveller.
