Local Cuisine and Dining Traditions in Botswana

Local dishes include beef seswaa, bogobe (pap), and morogo, eaten throughout Botswana and surrounding countries. Beef seswaa is slow-cooked beef, then shredded and cooked as a pot stew with an onion and pepper gravy. Bogobe is ground cornmeal boiled with water and salt until it has a porridge-like consistency. It’s served as the starch with meat and vegetables. Bogobe is often accompanied by a tomato, onion relish, or cooked spinach (morogo).

Meat is also traditionally grilled on open coals, as are large, white mielies (corn on the cob), which are farmed on a small, subsistence level. These are often seen on the roadside, where vendors are set up with grills serving the passing local public. The local beer is called St. Louis, and it goes down a treat!

Tipping Practices in Botswana

In Botswana, Pula (BWP) and USD are the only accepted currencies.

When it comes to tipping, as a general guideline, we recommend about USD20 per person per day for your guide, about USD15 for trackers, and about USD20 for general staff (porters, cooks, cleaners, waiters, watchmen, etc.). Some lodges have an anonymous tip box for all their staff, but you’re also welcome to give a gratuity directly to the person who helped you.

If you’re staying in a city hotel in Botswana, work on BWP35 porterage per person. As for dining out, the norm is between a 10% and 15% tip on the total amount of the bill (depending on the level of service). For a group of five to six people or more, some restaurants add a gratuity directly onto the bill, so check first to avoid double tipping.

The national language of Botswana is Setswana, spoken by the Tswana people in the region. English is recognised as a second official language and is spoken widely throughout the country.

People in remote and rural areas that tourists do not frequently visit are not likely to speak English well, so some basic Setswana will go a long way in communicating there.

There are also about 20 unofficial dialects spoken by people belonging to less dominant tribal groups, such as the Hambukushu, Herero, and Kalanga, while some original Bushmen dialects remain, known collectively as SeSarwa.

“Pula” is a word that is revered in Botswana. It appears on the country’s national coat of arms and, in its literal sense, means “let there be rain” – in a primarily semi-arid country, rainfall is precious.

The local currency is also called Pula, and this term is the country’s motto and rallying cry; it’s often shouted out by crowds at football matches whenever the national team, The Zebras, scores.

If you’re going to travel in light aircraft during your Botswana safari, opt for soft-sided bags; this is because these smaller aircraft have limited storage space.

The luggage weight limit is generally 33lbs (15kg) per person, so pack light! Most safari lodges offer laundry services, which makes packing light easier.

Clothing to Pack

Shorts and T-shirts are always good choices. Pack long-sleeve shirts and trousers for game drives and a jacket for cooler evenings. Try to avoid bright colours, and focus on comfortable clothing. Don’t forget your swimsuit if your lodge has a pool.

In winter, temperatures can drop to under 10°C/50°F, making morning game drives quite chilly. Packing a fleece sweater, scarf, and beanie is highly recommended. In places like the Kalahari, desert temperatures are extreme, and in winter it can get icy, so travellers should ensure they’re well prepared for the cold.

Closed shoes are required on your Botswana safaris to keep your feet protected, but also pack a pair of sandals or flip-flops for relaxing around the lodge or camp.

Sun Protection

It’s important to protect yourself from the sun when you’re out and about. The last thing you want is a sunburn! Sunscreen is essential, as well as a hat that covers your ears and the back of your neck, and sunglasses. 

Tech and Camera Gear

To charge your phone, laptop, etc., you’ll need the right adapter. In Botswana, the standard voltage is 230V, and the frequency is 50Hz. The primary types of electrical outlets used are Type D, Type M, and Type G.

If you’re bringing your camera, bring an extra battery and enough memory cards; don’t expect to be able to recharge your battery and download images on a daily basis. A waterproof bag for camera gear and other equipment will be handy in the rain.
