Cost of a Mozambique Safari

Africa's best tailor-made safaris

View Photos

A vacation in Mozambique can be an ideal complement to an African safari experience, offering a definitive blend of coastal beauty and wildlife adventure.

The country’s rich marine wildlife, particularly around the picturesque Quirimbas Archipelago, includes species such as whales, dolphins, and turtles, enhancing the eco-tourism appeal of the region.

From the pristine beaches of the Bazaruto Archipelago to the wildlife-rich reserves of Gorongosa National Park, our packages are tailored to mid- to luxury range budgets, all while promoting responsible and sustainable tourism.

When planning your trip, remember that international flights are a significant part of the overall cost and are not included in the quoted safari prices.

At Discover Africa, we offer clear and upfront pricing, with no hidden fees, so you can plan your Mozambique adventure with confidence.

Inclusive Estimates, No Hidden Fees

Our Safari Cost Estimator provides all-inclusive estimated pricing for Mozambique, covering park fees, conservation fees, and all necessary levies.

Our expert travel consultants are on hand to help you determine your exact safari budget based on your expected levels of comfort and safari experience.

This allows you to plan your safari with confidence, avoiding unexpected expenses.

Destination Choice:

Mozambique’s variety of safari destinations can include a luxury beach-and-bush experience in the Bazaruto Archipelago, but they come at a price.

Exploring Gorongosa National Park, known for its remarkable biodiversity, can be more challenging with a 6 to 8 hour road transfer or private charter.

Our Mozambique holiday tours allow you to enjoy the key beach highlights of this destination, from Kayaking, sailing and scuba diving. Our expert consultants can help you select the right option suited to your budget.

Accommodation:

This is a significant component of your Mozambique safari budget. Mozambique lodging options range from simple beach lodges and eco-camps to luxury resorts with private villas. Accommodation at top-tier lodges can range from $550 during the low season to $1320 per person per night for a luxury stay during the high season.

Combining trips within southern Africa, including Mozambique, can enhance your travel experience by offering exquisite lodges and varied marine life.

Tour Package:

Mozambique offers a variety of safari tour options from the wildlife-rich Gorongosa National Park to the unique marine safaris in the Bazaruto Archipelago. We only offer private tours options for this destination, offering a mix of land and marine wildlife encounters that cater to the mid- to luxury budget range.

Seasonality:

Mozambique’s peak travel seasons (June to October for safaris and May to December for beach holidays) align with the best weather and wildlife viewing conditions, which often results in higher prices.

Traveling during the shoulder season can offer lower rates. Our consultants can help you find the perfect window to book your Mozambique escape.

Duration of Stay:

The length of your stay will directly impact your budget.

A longer itinerary, combining different regions such as the Quirimbas Archipelago and Niassa Reserve, will increase the overall cost but provide a deeper and more varied experience of Mozambique’s natural beauty.

Group Size:

Travelling with your multi-gen family or a small group of friends can help reduce the per-person cost, as expenses like transportation and guiding services can be shared.

Smaller groups or solo travelers may face higher costs due to the lack of shared expenses, especially in remote areas.

It’s useful to note that some of our preferred partner lodges offer discounts for longer stays during the low season.

Type of Safari Experience:

The type of safari you choose will also affect your budget. For instance, a private, tailor-made safari that includes a mix of wildlife tracking in Gorongosa and marine adventures in Bazaruto come at a premium price. is the pricier option.

However, they do offer exclusivity and a personalized experience.

Activities and Excursions:

Mozambique offers a wealth of activities that can enhance your safari experience, from snorkeling and diving in world-renowned marine reserves to guided nature walks and cultural tours.

These activities can range from $50 to $300 per person, depending on the experience and location.

Park Fees and Permits:

Entry fees for Mozambique’s national parks and reserves vary by location. For example, park fees for Gorongosa National Park are about $20 per person per day.

Fees for marine parks, like those in the Bazaruto Archipelago, are typically higher, reflecting the conservation efforts and exclusivity of these areas.

Keep in mind that some outfitters add their own conservation and community levies, which will be in addition to the quoted price, depending on the camp. These fees are compulsory and are added directly.

Travel and Transfers:

When planning your Mozambique safari, consider the cost of international flights to Maputo or Vilanculos, as well as domestic transfers to your chosen lodges or islands. Internal flights, such as from Maputo to Vilanculos, generally cost between $200 and $400 per person each way.

During most beach holidays in Africa, boat transfers between islands or to coastal lodges may also add to your travel costs.

Meals and Drinks:

Many Mozambique lodges offer full-board packages that include all meals, but it’s important to confirm whether drinks are included.

Our travel consultants can help ensure you know what you’re paying for.

Opting for luxury accommodations often sees gourmet dining included as part of the experience.

Travel Insurance:

Comprehensive travel insurance is essential for covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unexpected events.

We do not sell travel insurance directly but our travel experts can provide guidance if needed.

Costs typically range from $100 to $300, depending on the level of coverage and the length of your stay.

Tipping and Gratuities:

While not compulsory, tipping in Mozambique is voluntary and should depend on the quality of the service.

We encourage guests to see this as a way to show appreciation and support for the community. Our guidelines suggest US$5 to 10 per guest per day for the general staff (tips are usually split amongst the staff).

Visas and Health Precautions:

There are currently no vaccinations required to enter Mozambique, but be sure to check for related information depending on your nationality, including whether you have visa-free access.

Personal Expenses:

Set aside a budget for souvenirs, personal items, and incidental costs. Depending on your preferences and the activities planned, this could range from $100 to $500.
