Namibia in January

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Namibia in January

January is in the midst of the rainy season, and although it’s primarily wet, temperatures are often hot.

At this time of year, wildlife viewing isn’t at its best, and it would be rare to spot any during a game drive. With the rain present, there are many pools of water to drink from, contributing to the dispersed animals.

However, birding is a popular safari activity in January.

Namibia is known for its vast desert landscapes. Because of this, rainy days aren’t generally cold, and showers don’t usually last long.

Heavy thundershowers aren’t a constant in Namibia during the wet season, which is typical for desert landscapes.

Weather in January

Rain is common during January but only occasionally for long periods. Since rain is often present, birding and photographic safaris are popular this month.

The weather is generally warm, so extensive clothing layering is not required. However, a rain jacket is helpful for sudden rain showers.

Places to Visit in Namibia and Why

Skeleton Coast

January is an excellent time to see wildlife at Skeleton Coast, including hippos, hyenas, and zebras. However, while they are rare, they are present.

Seals are another fantastic wildlife species on Namibia’s coast. Although the beach is unsuitable for swimming, stunning views await.

Etosha National Park

The wet season occurs from November to April, so landscapes are attractive, and the birding season is in full swing. Although rain is frequent, showers usually only last a short time.

Calving season occurs at the park, so you can spot wildlife with their young during game drives.

Damaraland

Damaraland is a region in northwestern Namibia known for its stunning landscapes, unique wildlife, and rich cultural heritage.

The wet season is in full swing during January, and although rain is persistent, visiting Damaraland can be good all year round.

You can expect to see desert-adapted elephants, black rhinos, and oryx.
