Pongola Game Reserve in South Africa

Nestled along the Pongolapoort Dam, this reserve offers the perfect combination of safari and water-based activities. Known for its conservation efforts, Pongola has a “light footprint” development philosophy to ensure that the environment is preserved.

This is one of the best places to see the white rhino. At Pongola, you can track these rhinos on foot, learning more about these incredible animals while contributing to their conservation.

Must-Visit Areas in Pongola Game Reserve

Lake Jozini: Fishing and Boat Safaris

Lake Jozini, the third largest lake in South Africa, is a fantastic place to go tiger fishing. Charter a boat and embark on an exciting fishing expedition!

The lake is surrounded by reserves abundant in wildlife. While on a boat safari, spot hippos and crocodiles in the water, and along the banks, sightings of elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and buffaloes are common.

Luxury Lodges: Waterfront Views

There are stunning luxury lodges in Pongola that overlook the dam and river, affording guests unmatched wildlife sightings.

Imagine relaxing on your private deck while watching hippos and crocodiles in the water as well as other species coming to the water’s edge to play and drink.

When’s the Best Time to Visit Pongola Game Reserve?

May to September – the dry season – is the best time for game viewing and tiger fishing, so plan your South Africa safari between these months.

Wildlife Found in Pongola Game Reserve

Four of the Big Five are present here, with just lions being absent.

Due to the abundant water sources, hippos and crocodiles are common sights.

Bird enthusiasts will be thrilled by the 350 recorded bird species here. Pongola is also a founding member of the Zululand Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA).

How to Get to Pongola Game Reserve

Pongola is accessible by road from Durban or Richards Bay. Land at King Shaka International Airport in Durban, after which the drive to the reserve is three to four hours.

Alternatively, fly to Richards Bay airport from another South African airport; from there, the drive to Pongola takes around two and a half hours.
