Must-Visit Areas in uMkhuze Game Reserve

iNsumo Pan: Birdwatching and Crocodile Spotting

The stunning iNsumo Pan hosts hippos, Nile crocodiles, and many bird species. This area is one of only two significant pink-backed pelican breeding colonies in southern Africa. iNsumo Pan also features two bird-viewing hides for prime birdwatching.

Fig Forest Walk: A Journey into the Past

Sycamore Fig Forest is located along the banks of the uMkhuze River; it’s a magical destination to explore for its rich bird life and massive trees – some of which are over 400 years old!

Watch the myriad of bird species flit through the tree branches, feeding on the variety of fruits these ancient trees bear.

When’s the Best Time to Visit uMkhuze Game Reserve?

The dry winter season, from May to September, is the best time to visit uMkhuze. Cooler temperatures make exploring more comfortable, and the lack of rain makes game viewing easier.

Wildlife Found in uMkhuze Game Reserve

Lions have been reintroduced to uMkhuze Game Reserve, so you have the opportunity to see these big cats as well as the rest of the Big 5 and rare species such as cheetah and wild dog while on a South Africa safari.

How to Get to uMkhuze Game Reserve

Travellers can fly into King Shaka International Airport, Durban. From the airport, it’s around a four-and-a-half-hour’s drive to the game reserve via lodge transfer.
