Boat Safaris in Tanzania

Take to the waters of Tanzania for a different perspective on the land and wildlife that call it home. Ideal for unique animal sightings, boat safaris will bring you closer to the smaller species that are often overlooked on game drives.

Why Should You Go on a Boat Safari in Tanzania?

Unique Wildlife Viewings

While on safari in Tanzania, you have the opportunity to take to the water on a boat safari. This allows you to experience Tanzania’s wildlife from a unique water perspective, from waterbirds in the reeds to elephants drinking and frolicking in the water.

Close Encounters With Hippos and Crocs

The Rufiji River, which runs through Nyerere National Park, the largest national park in Tanzania, is an incredible environment to explore while on a boat safari. You’ll get the opportunity to have encounters with crocodiles and hippos as they glide through the water, among other species.

Pristine Environments

The rivers running through Tanzania’s national parks are immaculate. While wildlife spotting is obviously one of the main attractions of a boat safari, the landscapes you glide past and the environments you’re able to access are awe-inspiring.

Fantastic Birdwatching

If you’re an avid birder, you can’t miss out on a boat safari in Tanzania! A water safari is perfect for birdwatching; the country houses over 1,100 species. The best time for birding is the wet season (also the hottest time of the year) when migratory species can be found.

Perfect Addition to a Traditional Safari

While on a Tanzania safari, the best thing to do is combine boat safaris with land-based game drives for a varied experience and to spot more wildlife.

Glide past hippos and crocodiles while on a boat safari and watch a variety of animals drink from the banks. Then, during a game drive, head deep into the savannah to see the Big Five and more species.

Best Destinations for a Boat Safari in Tanzania

Nyerere National Park

Nyerere is famous for its boat safaris thanks to the Rufiji River. This park is a Big Five safari destination; hyenas, cheetahs, hippos, and giraffes can also be seen, and the park houses one of the largest populations of African wild dogs. For birders, there are over 440 species to spot.

Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and the perfect place to boat among islands to spot the 400 bird species and their habitats. You may also be able to spot big game like elephants and giraffes on the islands.

5 Tips for a Boat Safari in Tanzania

1. Protect Your Gear

Pack waterproof gear for electronics and personal belongings. Waterproof gear can include a dry bag to house everything you want to take with you and a clear waterproof pouch for your phone so you can still take photos.

2. Follow Instructions

You’ll be with an experienced guide while on your boat safari – always listen to them! They know how to remain safe while on the water. Always wear a life jacket and follow the guide’s safety instructions.

3. Choose a Season

Tanzania is broken up into the dry season, from May to October, and the wet season with intermittent rains from November to April. While the dry season allows for easier navigation on the water and better wildlife viewing, the wet season offers the best birdwatching.

4. Pack Binoculars

Binoculars can really enhance your wildlife viewing. With a pair, you’ll be able to bring the animals closer to you and see the minute details. This is especially useful for birdwatching.

5. Be Careful

Always be mindful of crocodiles and hippos. Your guide will keep a watchful eye on the environments you boat through; listen to their instructions carefully for a safe boat safari.
