Ndutu in Tanzania

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

View Photos

Stretching from the western side of the Ngorongoro Crater to the Southern Serengeti, the Ndutu region is a vast open expanse of grass plains affording excellent game viewing. It’s less crowded compared to other parts of Tanzania, providing a more intimate safari experience. During February and March, vast herds of wildebeest stop here while on their migration route to give birth.

When here, you’re able to see these babies take their first steps! You’re not the only one who will be watching this – cheetahs and lions are on the prowl in Ndutu during this time looking for hunting opportunities offering some of the best predator-prey interactions, with high chances of spotting lions, cheetahs, and hyenas.

Top Destinations in Ndutu

The best places in Ndutu to see flocks of flamingos and important moments in the Great Migration:

Ndutu Lakes (Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek): Wildlife Attractions

These alkaline lakes are a major wildlife attraction, especially during the dry season when animals come to drink. The area around the lakes is also excellent for birdwatching, with flamingos and other migratory birds frequently spotted here.

Ndutu Plains: See Baby Wildebeest Take Their First Steps

Famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration calving season that occurs from January to March, this open landscape is a must-visit for witnessing thousands of wildebeest and zebras, along with predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas on the hunt.

Maswa Game Reserve: A Secluded Safari Experience

A more remote area south of Ndutu, Maswa Game Reserve is great for a more private Tanzania safari experience with diverse wildlife and fewer crowds. The reserve also has excellent game viewing opportunities, especially during the Great Migration.

When’s the Best Time to Visit Ndutu?

The dry season in the Serengeti runs from June to October. Wildlife viewing is easier as the landscape is drier and animals congregate around the few remaining rivers, lakes, and waterholes.

March to May sees the heaviest rain, while November to February is still considered to be the rainy season but with shorter bursts of showers. While game drives are wetter and wildlife harder to spot, the lush green landscapes are stunning sights, and the birdwatching is excellent. To witness the wildebeest calving season, plan your trip for January to March.

What Animals are Found in Ndutu?

During the migration season, massive herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle can be seen with lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas close by. Elephants, giraffes, and a variety of birds also inhabit the region, offering visitors a well-rounded Tanzania safari experience.

How to Get to Ndutu
