The northern part of the Serengeti is the location of dramatic river crossings during the Great Migration. Massive herds of wildebeest leap through the water while trying to avoid the giant crocodiles who attempt to hunt them. Hot on the wildebeests’ tails are predators looking for a weak link. For an incredible view of the Great Migration, the Northern Serengeti is a must-visit, especially if you’re looking for a more exclusive experience, as this part of the park is less crowded. This section of the park is also an excellent location for hot-air balloon safaris for a bird’s-eye view of the wildebeest herds. The landscape is characterised by green rolling hills and thickly vegetated granite outcrops and offers good game viewing year-round.
Top Destinations in Serengeti North
These two destinations are must-visit areas while in Northern Serengeti for the Great Migration and spectacular year-round game viewing:
The Mara River: A Dramatic Part of the Great Migration
Known as a critical water source for wildlife in the region, the Mara River also plays host to one of the most dramatic scenes in the East Africa wilderness: wildebeest migration river crossings. In an effort to get to lush grasslands, wildebeest brave the river, which is populated by crocodiles who are ready and waiting to take advantage of the moment.
The Great Migration is one of the most incredible natural spectacles on the planet, and witnessing it in Serengeti North is an unforgettable experience.
Lobo Valley: Perfect for a Big Cat Safari
Another less visited area of the Serengeti National Park is the Lobo Valley. If you want to go on a big cat safari, this remote and scenic region is perfect, as it’s home to an impressive pride of lions (known as the Lobo Pride). These big cats can often be seen catnapping on the granite kopjes (outcrops).
A North Serengeti safari also affords you the high possibility of seeing leopards and cheetahs. Where there are predators, there are prey! Buffaloes, gazelles, impalas, warthogs, giraffes, topsi, and hartebeest roam this land.
When’s the Best Time to Go on Safari in Serengeti North?
The prime time to visit is from July to October, when the wildebeest migration crosses the Mara River and passes through this region. During the dry season, the game viewing is also top-tier as wildlife congregates around permanent water sources, making them easier to spot.
Animals Found in Serengeti North
Along these serene rolling hills, in the dense vegetation, and on the granite kopjes that make up the northern part of the Serengeti, you’ll find a wealth of incredible wildlife. Visit the Lobo Pride of lions and see them napping in the sun or on the hunt. Look up into the trees, and you may spot a leopard in the branches.
As the Mara River is in this region, you’ll see pods of hippos as well as crocodiles. The river also attracts other wildlife to drink, including zebras, species of antelope, wildebeest, giraffes, and elephants.
