How to Get to the Beaches of Mainland Tanzania

You’ll arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam. From here, you can take a regional flight (which can take 45 minutes to two hours, depending on the flight) to Tanga, after which you take a short drive to Pangani.

For access to the southern beaches of Tanzania, you can catch a flight from Dar es Salaam to Mtwara Airport.

By Road

Bagamoyo is only a two-hour drive from Dar es Salaam; your resort or hotel may arrange transport for you. To get to Saadani National Park from Dar es Salaam, the drive will take between three and four hours.

Stretching from the western side of the Ngorongoro Crater to the Southern Serengeti, the Ndutu region is a vast open expanse of grass plains affording excellent game viewing. It’s less crowded compared to other parts of Tanzania, providing a more intimate safari experience. Given their close proximity, the two countries experience similar rainy seasons. Having said that, climate can vary significantly within each destination – often dictated by altitude.

For example, Tanzania’s highlands can get as cold as 10 °C, while the rest of the country rarely dips below 20 °C. At the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the temperature can drop to -27 °C on rare occasions. While Tanzania unquestionably has a far more extensive and diverse safari offering when comparing Tanzania Vs Rwanda, it does not have mountain gorillas!

Rwanda with just four protected areas in this heavily populated little country is quite simply outgunned by Tanzania on almost every safari metric, except primates.

With semi-habituated chimpanzees in the beautiful Nyungwe Forest and habituated mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda trumps Tanzania when it comes to primate safaris when comparing Tanzania Vs Rwanda.

That said, with a single savannah park in Akagera, the overall safari experience and diversity of safari offerings cannot hope to compete with Tanzania’s range and variety of attractions.

My advice would be to go to Tanzania for your safari experience with a one-week add on to neighbouring Rwanda to get your fix of gorillas and other primates.

A day perusing the sobering genocide museum and some of the monuments and churches in and around Kigali is a must-do activity for your ‘add-on’ itinerary to Rwanda.

Tanzania is famous for the annual Great Migration, when over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles travel from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of abundant grazing pastures and life-giving water.

Predators are abundant here too, with lions and cheetahs dominating. Leopards also make appearances, and wild dog populations are on the rise.

The rest of the Big Five also call Tanzania home, including the critically endangered black rhino of the Ngorongoro Crater and Mkomazi and giant elephant tuskers of Tarangire National Park. There is also an abundance of flamingos that visit Lake Manyara. This rounds out a wildlife experience in Tanzania to make it a safari destination unlike any other.

Hippos and crocodiles can also be spotted here, and birders won’t be disappointed as there are over 1,000 bird species, making Tanzania a fantastic birdwatching safari destination.

Selous Game Reserve is one of the best places to see wild dogs, while Ruaha National Park hosts a large elephant population as well as big cats (lions, leopards, and cheetahs).

In the western region of Tanzania, abutting Lake Tanganyika, are the primate strongholds of the Mahale Mountains and Gombe National Park. Here, travellers can trek through the rainforest to find families of chimpanzees. They aren’t overly habituated, so your experience feels authentic.

With the exception of the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, Aders’ duiker, Sykes’ blue monkey, and the diminutive suni antelope, the islands off the coast of Tanzania are all about marine wildlife. Dolphins are frequently seen on diving and snorkelling trips off the coast of Zanzibar and Mnemba Island, while whale sharks and turtles swim in the warm waters around Mafia Island.

Regions of Tanzania’s mainland also have their own unique local foods like wali (rice), ugali (maize porridge), chapati (a kind of tortilla), nyama choma (grilled meat), mshikaki (marinated beef), samaki (fish), pilau biryani (a rice dish), and ndizi nyama (plantains with meat).

Vegetables commonly used in Tanzania include bamia (okra), mchicha (a kind of spinach), njegere (green peas), maharage (beans), and kisamvu (cassava leaves). Tanzania produces at least 17 different types of bananas, which are used in soups and stews and to make chips.

In Tanzania, the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the accepted currency. The US dollar (USD) is also widely accepted in many tourist areas. We recommend taking small denominations for gratuities, as finding change at lodges is not always possible. When it comes to tipping, we recommend about USD20 per person per day for your guide and about USD20 for general staff (porters, cooks, cleaners, waiters, watchmen, etc.).

Some lodges and resorts have an anonymous tip box for all their staff, but you’re also welcome to give a gratuity directly to the person who helped you. If you’re staying in a city hotel in Tanzania, work on TZS200-400 for porterage per person.

As for dining out, the norm is between a 10% and 15% tip on the total amount of the bill (depending on the level of service). For a group of five to six people or more, some restaurants add a gratuity directly onto the bill, so check first to avoid double tipping.

Tanzania has a rich cultural heritage and historical sites, such as the ancient rock art at Kondoa. While on safari in Tanzania, you’re able to learn about the cultures and ancient traditions of indigenous tribes such as the Maasai and Hadzabe.

Tanzania has a large Muslim population, too, with the island of Zanzibar being almost entirely Muslim. While almost any dress code is acceptable in hotels and lodges, in certain city streets, beaches, and rural communities, it’s advisable to dress and behave more conservatively.

The holy month of Ramadan, the religious importance of Fridays, and the need to pray five times per day are all important factors of the Islamic faith that tourists should be aware of when out and about in towns and villages.

When it comes to photography, never take a photo against someone’s will. Instead, ask your guide to help you obtain permission. Avoid taking photographs of border posts, people in uniform, airports, or military installations.

While Swahili is the national language, Tanzania has around 129 different ethnic groups and has, therefore, evolved great linguistic diversity with four major African language bases, ranging from Bantu, Cushitic, and the Nilotic languages to the less comprehensively spoken Khoisan.

One of the founding directives of independent Tanzania was that no ethnic group should dominate, and this was made easier by the fact that none of the tribes exceed much more than 10% of the country’s overall population.

Swahili is the most widely spoken language, with English being largely absent from rural Tanzania and only really found in the larger towns, cities, and tourist areas.

What to Pack for a Safari Holiday

Your clothing choices should prioritise comfort and, as far as possible, be neutral in colour. Mornings and evenings can be chilly, so pack a sweater or two as well as a light rain jacket just in case.

For sun protection, bring SPF, sunglasses, and a hat that covers your ears and the back of your neck. For insect protection, insect repellent sprays and creams are advised.

Closed, sturdy walking shoes are needed for game walks, and pack a pair of lightweight shoes or flip-flops for relaxing at your lodge. To carry your necessities while on game drives and Tanzania walking safaris, bring a day pack. In it, pack a pair of binoculars – they can really enhance your experience.

Don’t forget chargers for your devices – in Tanzania, the standard voltage is 230V, and the frequency is 50Hz. The primary types of electrical outlets used are Type D and Type G.

What to Pack for a Beach Holiday

Lightweight, breathable clothing is a must for dressing for the tropical weather of the islands. Bring a lightweight rain jacket, too, just in case. Pack several swimsuits for days spent relaxing next to the resort pool and on the beach. Also, a spacious beach bag for your essentials (like snorkelling gear and a book).

If you’re planning to spend time in Stone Town or a local village, bring clothes that cover your legs, arms, and chest. A lightweight scarf that you can wrap around your shoulders and chest can come in handy. A high-SPF sunscreen is a must to protect your skin, and insect repellent is also advised. Pack sunglasses and a sun hat, too.

While you’ll probably spend a lot of time in sandals and flip-flops, pack a pair of walking shoes for days spent exploring. To protect your phone and camera from water and sand, add waterproof bags to your checklist.

Entry fees for Tanzania’s iconic parks contribute significantly to conservation efforts. For example, Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater charge around $60 to $70 per person per day. The fee to descent in the Ngorongoro Crater is $300 for the vehicle.

Keep in mind that some outfitters add their own conservation and community levies, which will be in addition to the quoted price, depending on the camp. These fees are compulsory and are added directly.

Travel and Transfers:

Given Tanzania’s vast size, internal flights are often necessary to connect different safari regions. Domestic flights can cost between $300 and $500 per person per leg, depending on the distance and airline.

You also have the option to choose a private vehicle with a safari guide from $500 per day and can accommodate up to seven people. $100 to $200 per trip, depending on the distance and type of transfer.

Meals and Drinks:

Most lodges in Tanzania offer full board options, including three meals a day and often some drinks.

High-end lodges offer more inclusive packages that cover premium drinks and additional services like laundry, while mid-range lodges might only include basic meals and local drinks.

Travel Insurance:

Insurance typically costs between $75 and $200, based on the level of coverage and the length of your stay.

Tipping and Gratuities:

While not compulsory, tipping in Tanzania is voluntary and should depend on the quality of the service. We encourage guests to see this as a way to show appreciation and support for the community. Our guidelines suggest $10 to $20 per person per day for guides and about US$5 to 10 per guest per day for the general staff (tips are usually split amongst the staff).

Most places have a ‘tip box’ for staff (excluding guides), allowing you to leave a collective tip and tip your guide separately. Tip once at the end of your stay at each lodge or camp.

Visas and Vaccinations:

There are currently no vaccinations required to enter Tanzania. Tanzania requires a valid yellow fever certificate for all visitors over 1 year old coming from or transiting through infected areas (Republic of Congo, Kenya and Uganda).
