Oltyiani Trail – Camping with the Maasai

Arrive early morning at Jomo Kenyatta and road transfer to Wilson on time for the local flight. Depending on your arrival, you might require a pre-night in Nairobi. Fly to Loita Hills where you are met by your Maasai Guide for the start of the walking 3 nights trail.

Your guides will offer you unique insights into the local fauna and flora. The Maasai will show you the local plants they use for ceremonial purposes and share their extensive knowledge of the trees and their medicinal uses. You will gain valuable insight into their culture and community life. Your guides will also look after the Donkey caravan that will carry all camp equipment and luggage.

Today, you will enjoy a leisurely 3 hours hike that will take you to River Camp , in the Ol Lasur Valley.

Once at camp, you'll be welcomed by cool drinks and warm smiles. Settle into the evening with hot showers then stories around the camp fire under the stars.

Experience your first night along the trails, hidden hot water bottles are a nice surprise as you jump into your cotton sheets and comfortable mattress.

Enjoy a hearty breakfast and leave River Camp for your walk to Oltyiani, which is the highest point in the Loita, overlooking the Rift Valley. depending on the water levels, you might be lucky to visit the Oltyiani waterfall.

The walk is about 3 hours and you will stop for lunch with stunning views overlooking the Rift Valley.

Enjoy a leisurely walk back to camp on time for a sunset drink and delicious dinner prepared on the open fire.

Today you will walk to your second camp. You set off after breakfast making your way to your Ossasinai Camp.

The trail heads east backdown into the 'Forest of the Lost Child', you come across a range of beautiful and unique landscapes.

it is a leisurely pace for today (about 5 hours walk with lunch break) to make the most of the stunning surroundings.

Arrive at the new camp that is set up, it is time for you to relax, put your feet up as you enjoy spectacular views of the forest. Enjoy your last dinner with the Maasai and a good night sleep.

Once you have freshened up and enjoyed breakfast, it is a short walk to the meeting point, where you are collected and drive out of the Loita Hills, on the way to the Maasai Mara. You will arrive at camp on time for a late lunch, spend some time to relax and enjoy the camp before dinner and night.

Speke’s Camp is situated on the boundary of the famous Maasai Mara Reserve, surrounded by fabulous indigenous trees overhanging the Olare Orok River. Speke’s Camp is a traditional styled safari camp offering a high level of service and cuisine. 24 hours solar power, flushing toilets, bucket showers, and a lounge tent. You will have a sole use of private vehicle, guide and spotter, offering you maximum flexibility for game viewing and organizing the day to suit you best.

The next days are filled with wonderful game viewing in the Mara. You may decide to wake up early and spend the whole day out in the reserve with a picnic breakfast and lunch or have a lie in and head out later in the day.

Breakfast at the camp before the good-byes and the road transfer to the airstrip. You fly back to Wilson airport, and road transfer to Jomo Kenyatta. Time at leisure until your own flight out, or chat to us if you wish to extend with a few days at the beach, a gorilla trekking, or a visit to Victoria Falls for example.
